Participant Agreement and Notice
The Sports Performance Assessments provide youth and high school athletes with a hands-on, data-driven evaluation of sprint and distance running performance. Assessments may be conducted indoors at the BYU Indoor Track or outdoors depending on weather conditions. These free assessments are designed for athletes in track and field, cross-country, football, soccer, lacrosse, softball, baseball, tennis, and any sport where speed, acceleration, and endurance are important. Participation in this program is voluntary.
By registering for or attending the Sports Performance Assessments, participants and their parents or guardians acknowledge and agree to the terms described in this participation notice.
The assessments may include running short sprints or distance segments, warm-up drills and movement instruction, biomechanical observation, performance measurement, and video recording for movement analysis and feedback. Athletes receive educational feedback intended to help them better understand running mechanics, efficiency, and performance.
Participation in athletic activities involves inherent risks including, but not limited to, falls, muscle strain, fatigue, or other minor athletic injuries that can occur during running or physical activity. Participants are responsible for determining whether they are physically able to participate in running activities. By participating in the Sports Performance Assessments, athletes and their parents or guardians acknowledge these risks and agree that participation is voluntary.
Video recordings may be captured during the in-person assessments in order to analyze running mechanics and provide feedback to athletes. These recordings may also be used to improve assessment methods, support educational demonstrations, and evaluate program effectiveness. Any research or educational presentations derived from the assessments will use de-identified data whenever possible, and personally identifiable information will not be publicly shared without additional permission.
Athletes who are unable to attend the in-person assessments may optionally perform similar analyses using online tools. Videos used with these tools are processed locally within the application and are not transmitted to the organizers of the Sports Performance Assessments. These videos remain private to the athlete or coach using the tool. Because the processing occurs locally and the videos are not collected by the assessment program, use of these tools does not require a waiver related to the Sports Performance Assessments.
The Sports Performance Assessments are conducted as an educational outreach activity intended to help athletes better understand performance and running mechanics while also introducing students to how data, biomechanics, and engineering are used in modern sports analysis. The assessments are educational in nature and are not medical evaluations and do not provide medical advice or diagnosis.
Remote Assessments
For athletes who are unable to attend the in-person assessments or who would like to perform the analysis on their own, many of the same evaluations can be conducted remotely. Athletes can record short videos of sprinting or distance running using a smartphone and upload the clips for analysis using online tools available at https://apopt.com. These tools provide data-driven feedback on running mechanics, stride patterns, and performance metrics similar to those evaluated during the in-person sessions. Athletes and coaches can review the results, track improvements over time, and use the feedback to guide training. Remote analysis allows athletes from any location to participate and benefit from the same performance insights used in the Sports Performance Assessments.
Who This Is For
Youth and high school athletes (elementary, middle school, high school)
Teams, clubs, or individual athletes
Sports that require running fast, changing direction, or sustaining speed over distance
What We Measure
Our assessments focus on sprint and distance analysis, including:
Sprint mechanics and acceleration
Stride length, cadence, and ground contact patterns
Running efficiency and posture
Speed maintenance and fatigue indicators (distance athletes)
Movement patterns that relate to injury risk and performance limits
Athletes receive objective feedback that connects technique to performance outcomes.
Program Introduction
We begin with a short overview explaining the purpose of the assessment and how data can be used to improve athletic performance.
Athlete Survey
Athletes complete a brief survey to capture baseline information, goals, and sport background.
Warm-Up and Instruction
Athletes perform a standard warm-up followed by targeted drills that provide context for the analysis.
Biomechanical & Performance Analysis
Using field-based data collection, we analyze sprinting and/or distance running in real time to evaluate movement patterns, efficiency, and speed-related metrics.
What Athletes and Teams Receive
Clear explanations of what the data means
Identification of strengths and limiting factors
Practical, sport-specific recommendations athletes can apply immediately
A better understanding of how technique connects to speed and endurance
Education & Career Exposure (Integrated)
During the visit, athletes are also introduced to:
How data and analytics are used in modern sports
Real examples from elite and professional sports environments
Educational pathways in sports analytics, biomechanics, data science, and engineering
One-on-one guidance for students interested in learning more about these fields
Additional & Follow-Up Analysis
Based on availability and interest, additional assessments may be scheduled to:
Track progress over time
Compare changes in technique or fitness
Provide updated recommendations based on new data
